Founder Remo Belli began drumming at the age of 12, becoming a professional at just 16. After serving in the US Navy during World War II he moved to California to continue with his music career, playing jazz and swing with artists such as Anita O'Day and Betty Hutton. As an offshoot of his passion for the drums Remo and fellow drummer Roy Harte opened a store, "Drum City" in 1952 on Santa Monica Boulevard, Hollywood.

The Doors Were Trend Setters Of Rock

I attended an event hosted by UVa New Music Ensemble. The name of this event was "A Night of New Music with Christian Wolff." The event consisted of members of the UVa New Music Ensemble performing pieces they had created in accordance to the composition for the piece which was created by Christian Wolff. There were also pieces such as a piano piece which were both composed and performed by Christian Wolff; however, the majority of the pieces were performed by students in the music department at UVa.

Beginner Guitar Questions

As well as the sheer invention of their music, the Beatles - in tandem with their producer George Martin and his recording engineers - pioneered monumental changes in the field of sound recording. Many of those methodologies, considered standard in the world of record production today, resulted from the incessant probing and questioning from all members of the group, in a seemingly endless quest to vary their basic sound, more so on their mid-to-late period albums.

Put Some Order in Your Guitar Effects Chain

There's no denying that Latin music has been one of the most popular genres in the country. Ever since its development decades ago, it has fused with many other forms to reinvent itself. The definition has spread from its humble beginnings in the dances of Central and South America to include many of the sub genres that can be found in many US metropolitan cities.

New Alternative Music: Joy Division Reincarnated for a New Generation of Indie Fans

A band is not complete, or even qualified to be called a band, if it does not have the bass guitar. The bass guitar is never in the spotlight for anything and therefore many people mistake it for just any other guitar like the rhythm or the lead guitar. However, the bass guitar does really play an important role when all things are considered in that it gives life to any band and adds quality of the music.

It’s Back To Jail For Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan is headed back to the slammer after a judge just threw the book at her for violating her probation once again. Oh LiLo will you ever learn! Although it was looking like things were going her way earlier today when the charges against her in the stolen necklace case went from felony grand theft to a misdemeanor, Lindsay Lohan’s joy was short lived. Judge Stephanie Sautner sentenced Lohan to 120 days in the slammer. TMZ is reporting that the judge also gave the trainwreck starlet 480 hours of community service and she won’t be picking up trash along the side of the road. Nope she will do her community service hours at the Los Angeles Downtown Women’s Center and the L.A Morgue. Neither one of those jobs sounds like a walk in the park to me but this judge was so not about giving Lindsay a break and I say you go judge stick it to her. As for the days that she was ordered to spend in jail, well we all know that there is no way that Lohan will do the full 120 days behind bars. I think at best she will probably do thirty days [...]

Understanding Rap and Hip Hop Music

The Bravery hit the headlines in 2005 with their self title debut album, featuring the enormously catchy 'Honest Mistake'. On the back of this single with its curious mix of New Order-esque bouncing synth rhythms and classic rock soaring guitar lines, this angry young band achieved large scale success in the 'popular indie' market in the UK at the same time as the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs and The Killers. Fast forward to 2011, and the 'average punter' in London's music scene has probably never heard of The Bravery. Why? A dispute with their UK publisher meant that The Bravery couldn't release their music on this side of the Atlantic for the last 6 years. Selfish of those record company folks, right? Not to worry. The band is back now and, damn it, they're just as angry as they ever were! They proved as much in four performances during their month-long residency at the Hoxton Bar and Kitchen in London's East End.

We can kind of see the resemblance!

Al Pacino will be portraying Phil Spector in an upcoming HBO film, written and directed by David Mamet.

The film is still in early development so it has yet to be confirmed whether or not it will cover Spector's murder trial and sentencing to 19 years to life.

We hope it does though, because we'd love to see Pacino wear those crazy wigs.

What do U think of the casting choice?

Last night David and I met up with our good friends Tamar, Ollie and Rob for a fun bowling date at Lucky Strike in Hollywood, CA. Tam and I have been trying to work out a time where we could all hang out for sometime now but our schedules have been getting in the way. We finally managed to get the time set and last night was our bowling date night. To be honest, we collectively did NOT exhibit the best bowling skillz last night … but we did have a blast and that is really all that matters.

David and I supped on delicious pizza at Prizzi’s Piazza before bowling and for those of you who are fans of their amazing food, I have the sad duty to report that the restaurant is closing at the end of this month. I was very shocked and very bummed to see the notice of closure on the door as we walked in. If you love Prizzi’s pizza, you’re running out of time to enjoy it :(

In happier news, tho, our bowling date was nothing but a total blast. Lucky Strike was pretty empty so we had a lot of room to play. David ended up winning but we all did our best … and that’s all that matters ;D

Today is Cinco de Mayo and while I normally would be out whooping it up with margaritas tonight, I’ll instead be jammin’ my buns off at the first of another set of 3 Prince concerts at The Forum in Inglewood, CA. I am really excited for tonight’s show … I’m hearing rumors that Stevie Wonder *may* make a surprise appearance at one of the shows this weekend. My guess is that if Stevie does appear, it’ll prolly be during Saturday’s concert. I cannot wait to see what’s gonna happen tonight :D Happy Thursday!

gov-andrew-cuomo-pushes-gay-marriage-in-new-york.jpg

We can DO this!

Governor Andrew Cuomo began a campaign this week to legalize gay marriage in New York.

He's planning on using a strategy that will go on a much different path than the similar bill, which failed in the state two years ago.

Attempting to avoid poor legislative and political planning, like the first time around, Cuomo has assembled a group of A-list political strategists and several gay rights groups to back his campaign.

A spokesman for the governor says:

"This is an important issue for the administration, and the governor is committed to working with New Yorkers to get the marriage equality legislation passed."

Cuomo has made this campaign his "mission" and "feels this is part of where New York should be — at the forefront."

Ross Levi of the Empire State Pride Agenda adds:

"We are going to garner all the resources we can. A strong united community working together is going to be a great asset in accomplishing our goal."

We are proud of Andrew Cuomo's efforts to legalize gay marriage in New York. Good luck to you and all your supporters. We're rooting for you.

SVS Subwoofer A Pure Musical Innovation

In 1977, a man was laid to rest that lived a life and accomplished so much that it could not be summed up in few words. He was a graduate of the esteemed U.S. Naval Academy from which he graduated a year early, he served his country for 43 years with many accomplishments rising to the rank of Rear Admiral, was a member of the 1920 U.S. Olympic wrestling team, at one time a daring navy jet pilot, later a revered Captain of USS Guadalcanal which under his command captured the only German submarine to be captured and boarded at sea which offered up secret maps, code books and other information that played a part in the allied victory, he is the author of several books, and is well known as a military hero and accomplished man of honor. Traditionally, gymnasts, acrobats, circus performers and dancers wear the unitard. It is a one-piece garment that is basically a combination between a leotard and tights. The unitard covers all of a person's body, but does not restrict movement in anyway. Lycra is blended with either cotton or polyester to create a stretchable fabric. Now we know what unitards are, lets take a look at some famous pop culture icons that have worn them.

Beyoncé Releases A Promo Photo For Her New Song

All week long we’ve been seeing photos from the set of the music video for Beyoncé‘s new song (HERE and HERE) and yesterday we got to hear a snippet of the track … but today we get to check out a fierce new promo photo for the song. It’s still not entirely clear what the [...]

Last night, David and I attended a performance of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Music Center in downtown LA and I am happy to report that the show was utterly and powerfully incredible. I’ve only heard the best things about Alvin Ailey shows and I was so pleased to learn that everything I heard turned out to be true. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Ailey‘s masterpiece Revelations, that particular piece was performed last night … along with new and older pieces. It was truly a night to remember.

Our program last night featured the Ailey performance pieces Anointed (2010), The Evolution of a Secured Feminine (2007), The Hunt (2001) and Revelations (1960). We were also shown a film titled Celebrating Revelations at 50 which featured interview footage of Alvin Ailey and performance footage of Revelations over the past 50 years. It never occurred to me that a dance program could be so moving but I was literally swept away by the majesty performed on stage last night. Dance is just magic … it can just wash away everything else around you and completely overtake your mind, soul and body. I don’t know how I managed to stay in my seat the entire time but by the time the audience stood up for the standing ovation at the end of the performance, I was DYING to jump up and dance around. David and I had the best time ever … it’s a date that I will remember for the rest of my life :)

Plans for tonight … an early showing of Scream 4 (can’t wait) and then a concert performance by Janet Jackson! It’ll be the first time I’ve ever seen her live so … I am excited!! Woot!! Happy Friday!! Happy Weekend.
