D&D games and RPGs literally form a cornerstone of my existence: I think they are fantastic, but they are also exceedingly odd when examined closely. They operate on a unique set of principles established by fantasy novels, traditions of heroic behaviour (and anti-heroic behaviour) and a number of things are expected of them which they can choose to fulfill or to subvert.
